Product Review: Fiber One Cereal

This is more informal than my typical reviews, but I just wanted to comment on this cereal I recently discovered (which is most likely old news to most dieters).

So, I was browsing lower calorie recipes, and I came across several that use Fiber One Original Cereal. I'd never investigated this, because most healthy cereals just look boring and haven't motivated me to try them. On a whim, I bought a box, especially because it had a coupon on the box which gave me a free 6-pack of fiber one yogurt to try out (haven't tried that yet).

My Rating
grade: B
would buy again: yes, for recipes, and maybe cereal.

Notes:
I am amazed at how low calorie this stuff is. 1/2 cup serving (which seems a bit small for a cereal serving, but it's probably because it already has more than half a day's fiber in that amount) is only 60, that's right SIXTY calories. I think I remember picking up a different box of Fiber One before (one that looked more appealing) and seeing it wasn't any lower in calories than most of the cereals I eat, so this was surprising.

Now, let me just say that the look of this cereal is not appealing at all. It much reminds me of the rabbit food pellets I used to buy when I had a rabbit. Who would want to eat this stuff? But I figured, blended in a recipe, it was worth a shot.

So I tried it out in a mock apple crisp recipe which I also posted about today, and it did what it was supposed to do suprisingly well. I was brave enough to try a few pellets by themselves, and they weren't horrible! They were very plain, and the shape is still weird, even in the mouth, but they didn't have a bad flavor at all. Amazing!

Today, I even tried out adding 1/3 cup in place of some of my Cinnamon Life cereal, and added a packet of sweetener, some extra cinnamon, and strawberries, and I think it was actually worth the calories I saved and extra fiber I got without sacrificing the flavor.

So, it's a winner! I also like that it comes in 2 individually sealed packs in the box, so it won't go stale as fast as a big bag would have. Another plus! Maybe one day I will even try out having it by itself, but I will have to work up to that. In the meantime, there are several other recipes I want to try it out in, even using it in place of breadcrumbs for baked "fried chicken".
